A preliminary post-launch validation of TMI by comparing the brightness temperatures of the TMI to SSM/I (DMSP f14) showed some biases between the two. In general, the TMI tended to yield warmer than the SSM/I at the lower (~150K) end of the brightness temperature range, and warmer in the higher end. A linear best-fit from available data gives the difference, at 250K, a range of from (-)0.3K (37 GHz H) to (-)2.7 K (19 GHz V). Validation by comparing to ground-truth is continuing. On occasion, the 21 GHz channel cold calibration counts exhibits large changes from one scan to the next. This can lead to temperature uncertainties of a few degrees. We will flag any scan whose average cold count for this channel differs greater than 12 from the previous scan value by setting Bit 6 (MSB) within the validity byte field in the Scan Status Vdata.
