Further extension may be considered at the end of that period by the Earth Science Senior Review process with even the potential of overlap with the forthcoming (2010) Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission.

During weekdays, Eclipse is used to command the S/C for approximately four passes. Noops, manual playbacks of data, and data releases are performed. Eclipse is used to shadow events on nights and weekends.

05-04-2000	TRMM Satellite Used to Improve Tropical Forecasting - The TRMM Microwave Imager (TMI) represents the first microwave spacecraft sensor capable of accurately measuring sea-surface temperatures through clouds. Science team members have found that data from the TMI sensor onboard the spacecraft has great potential to increase the accuracy of tropical storm and climate forecasts. Microwave radiation penetrates clouds with little loss of signal thereby providing an uninterrupted view of the ocean surface whereas much of the infrared radiation, typically used for measuring sea-surface temperatures from satellites, are blocked by cloud cover. 04-20-2000	A 180 degree yaw maneuver was performed at 12:52:13; The TRMM spacecraft is now flying in the +X forward direction. (The next yaw maneuver is scheduled for May 19, 2000.)
04-10-2000	The CERES Instrument Total Channel Sensor Temperature Control was disabled at 17:09:01, which reduced the number of bridge balance resets to a normal amount. There have been periodic spikes in analog telemetry, which have lasted for only one packet update, and are believed to be caused by the noise that the instrument is experiencing.
04-09-2000	The LaRC team has recently documented noise in the instrument science data (began 3/17 but the LaRC team did not notice the noise until March 23rd, when it was large enough to be flagged in the ground processing of the science data). The noise has been gradually increasing since then and has started to cause bridge balance resets (total, longwave, and shortwave). These resets appear to occur most frequently at orbit sunset (sunlight going to eclipse), and there also appears to be a diurnal pattern to the frequency of the resets. Because the science data is replaced with fill data during these resets and is therefore invalid, the LaRC team has begun to research ways to reduce the frequency, and therefore the impact, of these resets. As a first step to help reduce the frequency of the bridge balance resets, the LaRC team has asked TRW to build a special microprocessor load to redefine the Normal scan range. The new special microprocessor load was tested with the simulator on 4/7/00 and uplinked to the spacecraft later that day, at 20:37z. The LaRC team has reported that the load has reduced the frequency of the resets, but further analysis is required to determine to what extent the new load has helped.
03-31-2000	A 180 degree yaw maneuver was performed at 05:12:21; The TRMM spacecraft is now flying in the -X forward direction. (The next yaw maneuver is scheduled for April 20, 2000.)
03-07-2000	A 180 degree yaw maneuver was performed at 23:25:17; The TRMM spacecraft is now flying in the +X forward direction. (The next yaw maneuver is scheduled for March 31, 2000.)
03-04-2000	A VIRS Self-Reset #11 occurred at 12:36:36z. The instrument was manually placed back in the nominal configuration during the next real-time event.
03-02-2000	The CERES packets were commanded to gimbal type and AB asynchronous rotation operations were performed on 02-28-00 (170 - 190 degrees) and 02-29-00 (160 - 200 degree) in an attempt to lubricate the bearings and characterize their performance. On 03-01-00 the AB async operations continued using 150 - 210 degree. The instrument stalled twice at 179.7 and 179.8 degree before being commanded to Standby. Nominal CT operations were then continued at the 179.8 degree position, which is essentially the nominal CT azimuth position. The AB async testing was resumed on 03-02-00 (170 - 185 degree), with stalls occurring again at 19:48z and 19:51z. The range was then changed to 175 - 185 degree and the instrument successfully moved to 175 degree on command. The AB async testing was resumed (160 - 200 degree) with no further stalls and the instrument mode was commanded back to CT at 22:26:35z.
02-27-2000	The CERES instrument Contamination Safe Mode azimuth angle was permanently redefined from 165 degree to 180 degree to match the CT azimuth position and avoid the need to rotate in azimuth for each maneuver.
02-26-2000	The CERES azimuth gimbal stalled following the execution of the stored command to send it from Contamination Safe to Crosstrack mode (AR #79) after burn #1 of Delta-V #165. CERES was placed in Safe mode during the event following burn #2 (18:29z). LaRC personnel concluded the azimuth stalled due to the length of time CERES was off and not moving and is not expected to be a permanent problem. CERES was placed back in Crosstrack on 02-27-00 at 20:21:56z
02-24-2000	The CERES instrument was turned on to coincide with the eruption of a volcano in the Philippines at 21:26:00z. CERES will now remain on permanently unless there is a low power condition. The instrument will be placed in Safe mode during an ACS anomaly (Sun Acquisition and Safehold).
02-09-2000	A 180 degree yaw maneuver was performed at 23:40:51; The TRMM spacecraft is now flying in the -X forward direction. (The next yaw maneuver is scheduled for March 7, 2000.)

01-12-2000	TRMM Satellite Used to Improve Rainfall Forecasting Accuracy - New research shows that the accuracy of three-day rainfall forecasts in the tropics can be improved by as much as 100% percent by combining existing forecast models with satellite rainfall data. Researchers at Florida State University have found that by adding rainfall observations collected by NASA's TRMM satellite and other meteorological satellites to forecast models, they can more than triple the accuracy of rainfall forecasts for the first 12 hours of the forecast. 1999

12-29-99	A special Delta-V maneuver wasperformed to place TRMM above the nominal orbit box for the year rollover (to allow more time to establish communication with the spacecraft if difficulties arose with the ground system). As a result of this extended burn, the next Delta-V is not needed until 01-10-00. A command request from MSFC was performed at 20:46z to reset the LIS instrument, configure it back to nominal, and disable the heater auto-select.
12-24-99	A 180 degree yaw maneuver was performed at 19:58:16; The TRMM spacecraft is now flying in the -X forward direction. (The next yaw maneuver is scheduled for Janaury 24, 2000.)
12-19-99	A special Delta-V maneuver on December 29th (99-363) will place TRMM above the nominal orbit box for the year rollover. This will help prevent TRMM from falling below the box in the event communication with the spacecraft or the ground system is lost for an extended period due to Y2K. A special RTS is being built for the year rollover that will place the Observatory in Sun Acquisition mode if communication is lost for more than 24 hours (testing still needs to be completed).
12-16-99	It has been confirmed that the TRMM satellite will be left on and running during the century change. TSDIS should be receiving both IP and Realtime data during the period (if the networks remain up).
12-15-99	A walk-through was performed on the CERES instrument for the removal of CERES from load-shed plan. The CERES instrument will be powered on in mid-February 2000; currently there are no plans to manually remove power from the instrument once operations have resumed.

KWAJEX will provide the detailed observations of the physical parameters associated with tropical rainfall that are needed to validate TRMM satellite algorithms including the microphysical parameters required for cloud and precipitation models.
