ANDREA FIRST NAMED FOR 2007 SEASON
The National Hurricane Center named Andrea as a Subtropical Storm at 1500 UTC on May 9 when it was about 150 miles (240 km) northeast of Daytona Beach, Florida. This was three weeks before the official start of the Atlantic Ocean hurricane season which begins in June. The first image on the right is a "top down" rainfall analysis image of the storm using data from the TRMM satellite captured on May 9, 2007 at 0037 UTC (May 8, 8:37 PM EDT). Rainfall intensity was
weak throughout the barely organized storm. Andrea became progressively less
organized until the National Hurricane Center downgraded the storm to a tropical depression and discontinued advisories at 11:00 PM EDT the next day.
The 3-D image on the right which shows the vertical structure of Andrea was made using TRMM Precipitation Radar (PR) data captured at the same time as the image on the top right. Thunderstorm towers were only of moderate height and there were few thunderstorms near the center of the storm's circulation.
TRMM is a joint mission between NASA and the Japanese space agency JAXA.
