HEAVY RAINS BRING FLOODING, LANDSLIDES TO BRAZIL
At least 50 people have been killed in southeastern Brazil since the beginning
of the new year due to flooding and landslides brought on by torrential rains.
The hardest hit areas were the states of Rio De Janeiro on the coast and Minas
Gerais, which is mountainous and adjacent to Rio De Janeiro to the north. The
TRMM-based, near-real time Multi-satellite Precipitation Analysis (MPA) at the
NASA Goddard Space Flight Center monitors rainfall over the global tropics. MPA
rainfall totals are shown here for southeastern Brazil for the period 1-9 January
2007. The highest rainfall totals for the period (shown in red) are on the order
of 8 to 10 inches and extend inland from along the coast just north of the city of
Rio De Janeiro westward over the highlands. The heavy downpours and thunderstorms
were triggered by a stalled out frontal boundary, which provided the focus for
tropical moisture streaming from the north.
