Super typhoon Durian formed early on the morning of
November 26th (local time) south of Guam and became a tropical storm the same day. After slow
intensification Durian became a minimal
typhoon on the afternoon of November
28th. On the 29th Durian intensified
and became a super typhoon. A deadly combination of torrential rains from Durian and volcanic ash from the Mayon volcano in the central Philippines caused massive mudslides. This resulted in the loss of over 1000 lives and displacement of more than a million persons in the Philippines.
Typhoon Durian then moved into the South China Sea and
weakened to a tropical storm. It regained typhoon
intensity of 65 knots (75 mph) on December 4th and hit the southern coast of Vietnam on the 5th as a strong tropical storm resulting in over 100 persons killed or missing.
