This image of Hurricane Fabian was taken by the Tropical Rainfall Measuring
Mission (TRMM) satellite at 08:05 UTC (5:05 am AST) on September 5, 2003 as
it was bearing down on Bermuda. Fabian was still classified as a strong
Category 3 storm with winds of 125 mph by the National Hurricane Center and
would become the strongest hurricane to hit Bermuda in 50 years. The image
gives a top down view of the storm with rainfall rates from the TRMM
Precipitation Radar (PR) in the inner swath and the TRMM Microwave Imager
(TMI) in the outer swath overlaid on TRMM Visible Infrared Scanner (VIRS) data
(white areas). The image shows that Fabian was becoming less organized with
an open eye and most of the heavy rain (darker reds) on the western side of
the storm and not near the center.
TRMM is a joint mission between NASA and the Japanese space agency NASDA.
