TYPHOON MAN-YI HITS JAPAN
Typhoon MAN-YI which hit Japan on Saturday July 14, 2007 was responsible for
at least three deaths and injuries to more than 70 people.
The image on the right used data received from
the TRMM satellite when MAN-YI was
pounding the island of Kyushu on July 14, 2007 at 0105 UTC.
When these data were captured MAN-YI had weakened from a powerful
category 4 typhoon to a category 2 storm with wind speeds of about
90 knots (104 mph). The background image shows the horizontal
pattern of rain intensities estimated from TRMM satellite data.
Rain rates in the center swath are based on the TRMM Precipitation
Radar (PR), and those in the outer swath on the TRMM Microwave
Imager(TMI). The rain rates are overlaid on infrared (IR) and visible (VIS)
data from the TRMM Visible Infrared Scanner (VIRS). The TRMM Precipitation
Radar (PR) made it clear that the western part of the eye wall
had eroded but heavy precipitation of over 50 mm/hr was still falling in the eastern half of the storm. CLICK HERE to see a 3-D "flyby" animation of the storm courtesy of TRMM Precipitation Radar.
