FLOODING IN PANAMA

The TRMM-based, near-real time Multi-satellite Precipitation Analysis at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center can be used to monitor rainfall over the global Tropics. This image shows 8-day rainfall accumulations over Central America for the period 20 to 28 November 2006. A distinct "bulls eye" feature or precipitation maximum of over 320 mm (~13 inches, shown in the darker red) is evident west of the Panama Canal over the Rio Indio watershed. The heavy rains were a result of a stationary front, in this case a stalled cold front. The incipient flooding was first reported on Friday the 24th of November 2006. Images produced by Hal Pierce (SSAI/NASA GSFC) and caption by Dr. Colin Seftor (SSAI/NASA GSFC).
