Typhoon Sinlaku (September 7, 2002)

BEIJING, China -- Nine people were killed and three missing as Typhoon Sinlaku unleashed heavy rains and winds on China's southeast coast. Hundreds of thousands of people were forced to move to safety as torrential rains and high winds battered the area. The official Xinhua news agency said Sinlaku hit land on Saturday evening near the coastal city of Wenzhou in Zhejiang province.

The TRMM satellite passed almost directly over typhoon Sinlaku as it neared the coast of China on September 7, 2002 at 0540 UTC . A TRMM Precipitation Radar swath is overlaid on a MODIS image (0510 UTC) for the displays shown just above.
