TEXAS, OKLAHOMA HIT WITH MORE FLOODING
It has been a very wet period for the Southern Plains as Texas and Oklahoma are
hit by yet even more torrential rains. A stagnant weather pattern over the
south-central US continues to focus moisture and storms over the region. (SEE DEADLY FLOODING IN NORTHERN TEXAS on 24-20 June 2007.) The
latest round of heavy storms dumped up to 18 inches of rain in Central Texas on
the night of 26 June 2007 (Tuesday). It has been the wettest year on record so
far for Austin, which has received over 30 inches of rain since January. The
TRMM-based, near-real time Multi-satellite Precipitation Analysis (MPA) at the
NASA Goddard Space Flight Center is used to monitor rainfall over the global
Tropics. MPA rainfall totals are shown in the image above for the period 20 to
28 June 2007. The MPA shows upwards of 200 mm (~8 inches, red areas) fell over
parts of Central Texas and southern Oklahoma. A broad area of at least 50 mm
(~2 inches) of rain fall covers almost all of Texas and Oklahoma.
